Fascinating article – not your usual techy brain-dump.
People have been writing about the coming age of ARM for many, many years. What is really going to change things this time around — is Android running on ARM. The mobile space has needed a general purpose hardware/software stack for a long time, and now it has it.
What we are seeing is the exact same phenomenon that drove the rise of Wintel in the 80s/90s — a nice standardized platform that uses the same basic technology/interface no matter where you buy your device. Standardization lets companies produce customized versions of the same basic product, and lets consumers feel confident that what they can use whatever they end up coming home with. It also pushes down prices.
